INTERMEDIATE 1 Reading Club Project

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES WEBQUEST

 INTRODUCTION

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson often drew different conclusions from the same clues, the same pieces of information. They then looked for additional evidence to prove that something was true.

You are a self-employed research writer. You have been asked by the Unsolved Mysteries Society to make a presentation for a documentary TV programme. It is very important to find accurate information, because the people at the Unsolved Mysteries Society are only interested in the facts!

 TASK

The Unsolved Mysteries Society wants a presentation which analyzes the information about one of these topics.

Your paper will explain the facts, the theories, which theory has the most support, and what aspects of the mystery are still unexplained. The producers will use this information as they prepare the documentary.

ATLANTIS, A LOST CIVILISATION?

THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE

In the Atlantic Ocean, bounded by the island of Bermuda; Miami, Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico, is an area where planes and ships have disappeared without warning. The U. S. military insists it's all coincidence. But what do YOU think?

 BIGFOOT

For more than 400 years people have reported finding footprints of a very large human in the western United States and throughout the world. Real or hoax? You decide.

CROP CIRCLES

These are circles in a field which appear mysteriously overnight. People have confessed to making some as jokes. But some evidence shows there may be another explanation!

AMELIA EARHART

Amelia Earhart was a daring pilot at a time when most women were not allowed to work outside the home. On July 2, 1937, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while trying to fly around the world. Her plane was never found. What happened to her?

EASTER ISLAND

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean sits a collection of huge stone carvings. The Easter Island Moai have been the subject of speculation for centuries. How did the native people move and carve all that stone? And why?

PROCESS

The process of preparing the Presentation has several steps.

1.       In groups, choose an unsolved mystery.

2.       Find facts and theories about the mystery. Take notes from the Internet.

3.       Organize the material.

4.       Plan and write your presentation.

5.       Revise your presentation- check spelling and punctuation.

6.       Prepare a Powerpoint presentation of your work.

7.       Present the project to the other groups. Answer any questions.

CONCLUSION

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were always able to solve the crime. No situation was a mystery to them for very long. But they are characters in fiction!

You, in contrast, have investigated a real mystery. You have found the most accurate information available and have presented your information to the class.

Congratulations! Holmes and Watson would be proud of you!

THE BIRDS

You are a new film company. Your first project is to make a NEW short, 20 minute film of the story THE BIRDS.

TASKS:

1.             Choose a name for your film company:

NAME:

____________________________________________________________

2. Prepare the story. Read this part of a film story from It Happened near a Lake. Then work with other students in your film company.  Make notes for a film story for THE BIRDS. Choose 5 important scenes.

Scene 1: A 1950s kitchen in a small American town. Mr Beaseley sits at the table opening his post. Calmly, he tells his nasty wife that someone has left him $400 000.

Scene 2: To show that they have travelled a lot, several travel advertisements pass by Mr and Mrs Beaseley as they stand with their suitcases: the Andes, the Yucatan, Buenos Aires.

Scene 3: A  comfortable hotel in BuenoS Aires: the arrival area, Mr Beaseley talks to a Portuguese doctor (both are dressed in white suits) over a cup of coffee. They plan a trip up the River Amazon to see a terrible monster.

 OPENING TITLE SCENE:

SCENE 1:

SCENE 2:

SCENE 3:

SCENE 4:

SCENE 5:

3. Choose your actors, from anywhere in the world. Here are your characters:

NAT HOCKEN, THE FATHER:       _______________________________

NAT´S WIFE (Give her a name):    _______________________________

JIL AND JOHNNY:                  _______________________________

MR AND MRS TRIGG:               _______________________________

JIM, THE COWMAN:               _______________________________

4. Choose a place to film.

The story takes place by the sea. This is important because the gulls come and go as the sea goes in and out. This gives the family time to collect wood, food and petrol. Each member of the group should suggest somewhere to film. Then vote on the best idea.

PLACE TO FILM:

5. Choose your music. The music is going to be very important. Use it to change the mood, and to build up the feeling of terror towards the end.

OPENING MUSIC:  ______________________________

 SCENE 1: _____________________________________

SCENE 2: ______________________________________

SCENE 3:_______________________________________

SCENE 4:_______________________________________

SCENE 5:_______________________________________

CLOSING MUSIC:  _______________________________

6. Think of a clever line to advertise your film. Alfred Hitchcock advertised his 1963 film of the birds like this : The Birds are coming…

ADVERTISING IDEA:

7. Choose your favourite scene from the film plan. Write the words for the actors. Choose people in your group to act the different parts. Add new parts if there are too many of you. Practise the scene – you will act it out for the class.

8. Now, prepare your presentation on POWERPOINT.

PRESENTATION DAY

1.   Present  your film plan to the class WITH THE MUSIC.

2.   Then act out the scene you have chosen.

This is the READING PROJECT FOR ONE OF THE GROUPS OF INTERMEDIATE 1.

On Wednesday/Thursday, I will explain which students will do which project!! And I will give you a paper copy of this information.

INTERMEDIATE 1 Reading Club Project

Let's Throw a Wedding for Romeo and Juliet!

Introduction and Task

Romeo and Juliet are perhaps the most famous lovers in history. In the play Romeo and Juliet, the young lovers marry in a secret wedding without a full service, without  guests and without a wedding banquet. Your TASK is to change history and plan the party of the centuries!

Let's rewrite history and literature and plan a wedding for Romeo and Juliet! You have no budget, the sky is the limit!  Invite as many people as you want, invite kings, musicians, Shakespeare, Leonardo Dicaprio, Capulets, Montagues....

IMPORTANT: the food, music, fashion, games, entertainment, hairstyles, decorations, etc must all be appropriate for the lives and times of Romeo and Juliet.

You will work in three groups:

The Guest List      Fashion and Food  Music and Games

Each group will complete the research and tasks as described below.  At the end of the project phase each group will present their project in a class presentation using POWERPOINT.

 Process and Resources

Read the specific task your group is assigned.

Group 1 - The Guest List : Who Is Invited and Where Do They Sit.

One of the most difficult tasks when planning a wedding of this size is getting all the people together.  You have two households to consider, and don´t forget you can include any people living or dead!  Create a list of guests and a seating chart for tables of up to ten guests per table.  Think about compatibility!

Group Two - Fashion and Food: What Do the Wedding Party and Guests Wear? What Will You Feed Them?

The first thing your group will do is to search your resources and determine what types of clothes your wedding party and guests will wear.  You are to design a wedding dress for Juliet and clothes for Romeo

Now you have to feed your guests. YOU are going to search the internet and determine the best menu for your guests

After you decide on the food, you will create an actual menu. The menu must reflect the time period of Romeo and Juliet or Shakespeare.

Group Three ~ Music and Games ~ What Will We Do For Fun?

The first thing your group will do is to search your resources and determine what types of music will be appropriate for this wedding.  You are to prepare a song list including song titles, composers, performers and lyrics.

Then decide on a list of games, activities, dances and fun for the guests.

Presentation

In turns, present your information to the group.  The presentation is an illustrated oral presentation, using POWERPOINT.

Conclusion

Congratulations on all your efforts!  I hope you had fun learning about Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare, and the history behind the play.  Hopefully you are now keen to read more Shakespeare!
