INTERMEDIATE 1

Reading Club Project

THE BIRDS

You are a new film company. Your first project is to make a NEW short, 20 minute film of the story THE BIRDS.

TASKS:

1.             Choose a name for your film company:

NAME:

____________________________________________________________

2. Prepare the story. Read this part of a film story from It Happened near a Lake. Then work with other students in your film company.  Make notes for a film story for THE BIRDS. Choose 5 important scenes.

Scene 1: A 1950s kitchen in a small American town. Mr Beaseley sits at the table opening his post. Calmly, he tells his nasty wife that someone has left him $400 000.

Scene 2: To show that they have travelled a lot, several travel advertisements pass by Mr and Mrs Beaseley as they stand with their suitcases: the Andes, the Yucatan, Buenos Aires.

Scene 3: A  comfortable hotel in BuenoS Aires: the arrival area, Mr Beaseley talks to a Portuguese doctor (both are dressed in white suits) over a cup of coffee. They plan a trip up the River Amazon to see a terrible monster.

 OPENING TITLE SCENE:

SCENE 1:

SCENE 2:

SCENE 3:

SCENE 4:

SCENE 5:

3. Choose your actors, from anywhere in the world. Here are your characters:

NAT HOCKEN, THE FATHER:       _______________________________

NAT´S WIFE (Give her a name):    _______________________________

JIL AND JOHNNY:                  _______________________________

MR AND MRS TRIGG:               _______________________________

JIM, THE COWMAN:               _______________________________

4. Choose a place to film.

The story takes place by the sea. This is important because the gulls come and go as the sea goes in and out. This gives the family time to collect wood, food and petrol. Each member of the group should suggest somewhere to film. Then vote on the best idea.

PLACE TO FILM:

5. Choose your music. The music is going to be very important. Use it to change the mood, and to build up the feeling of terror towards the end.

OPENING MUSIC:  ______________________________

 SCENE 1: _____________________________________

SCENE 2: ______________________________________

SCENE 3:_______________________________________

SCENE 4:_______________________________________

SCENE 5:_______________________________________

CLOSING MUSIC:  _______________________________

6. Think of a clever line to advertise your film. Alfred Hitchcock advertised his 1963 film of the birds like this : The Birds are coming…

ADVERTISING IDEA:

7. Choose your favourite scene from the film plan. Write the words for the actors. Choose people in your group to act the different parts. Add new parts if there are too many of you. Practise the scene – you will act it out for the class.

8. Now, prepare your presentation on POWERPOINT.

PRESENTATION DAY
